How do I fix up an old boat?
tc46 asked:
Hi- My fiancee has an old boat handed down from his father who passed away. It has sentimental values so I thought I would fix it up for him for x-mas.

I know I want to clean it up, re-paint, and make new seat covers. But I don’t really know what else I can do or should do. Does anyone have any suggestions on products to use or tips?

welll you are on the right start but it is more than just repair for example it take a marine / for paint not regular car paint. the wiring is marine wiring and automotive wiring the seat material you can get from any fabric store. any decking is treated plywood and not regular plywood decking. good luck it takes time to restore a boat.

cleaning the boat up is a good start. then you need to do an assessment of what needs to be replaced or repaired. if the boat is quite old usually the floor is weak and will need to be repaired. i had to replace the runners and put down new decking on my 1979 phantom. i also fiber glassed The whole floor. and it is stronger than ever. next it will be a good idea to check the boat wiring. far too many people think they are electricians and jerry rig the wiring on a boat. i had to rewire my whole boat, someone had used speaker wire to run the sensors to the gas tank. you should use 14 guage marine wiring. make sure to check out the bilge pump and any guages as well. next i would recommend doing maintenance on the power plant. make sure you have a good battery and all of the gas connections have no leaks. i had to replace all of the hoses to my boat, but hey no one wants a fire when you are on the water right?? i would recommend doing any cosmetic upholstery work last, since what good is new upholstery on a boAt that wont run or isnt sea worthy. good luck its alot of work. maybe you and your fiancee can do the work together?? nothing like a good project to bring people together!!!

Cleaning and inspecting is the first task. If this is more than a small row boat or non powered vessel, have someone (or several people) who knows boats take a look at her. Many people do not realize what can go wrong with a boat, or how to properly repair it. Moisture and age can cause major damage to structural components while the outside looks great.
The good news is that just about anything is repairable. More good news is that anyone with some basic tools and basic knowledge can do the repairs given you ask enough questions. Most boat people are very willing to offer advice.
